Best Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

In the U.S., when the topic of clean energy comes up, we like to debate concepts like climate change or global warming, turning it into a political debate more than a strategic one. Subsidies to industries such as wind or solar, no matter how small, take criticism from politicians and the media while the government continues to subsidizes oil, gas, coal, and nuclear production to the tune of billions of dollars each year. We neglect to account for externalities such as the cost of war ships keeping the Suez Canal open when Iran threatens to close it, oil spills inland and offshore, the wars in Iraq, and the limited liability given to the operators' nuclear plants. If Fukishima happened here, it would be no problem for U.S. companies -- Uncle Sam would pick up the tab.

In China, the energy debate is very different. When China sees its imports of coal rising and dependence on foreign oil growing, it springs into action. Not by screaming, "Drill, baby, drill," but by investing billions of dollars in home-grown energy sources. Yes, I'm talking about clean, renewable energy, and China's investment in these energy sources make U.S. subsidies look like the half-hearted effort they are.

5 Best Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Juno Therapeutics Inc (JUNO)

Juno Therapeutics, Inc. (Juno) is a United States-based clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company. The Company is engaged in developing cell-based cancer immunotherapies based on its chimeric antigen receptor (CAR), and high-affinity T cell receptor (TCR), technologies to genetically engineer T cells to recognize and kill cancer cells. Through genetic engineering, the Company inserts a gene for a particular CAR or TCR construct into the T cell that enables it to better recognize cancer cells. Its CAR technology directs T cells to recognize cancer cells based on the expression of specific proteins located on the cell surface, whereas its TCR technology provides the T cells with a specific T cell receptor to recognize protein fragments derived from either the surface or inside the cell.

To provide treatment, the Company harvests blood cells from a cancer patient, separate the appropriate T cells, activate the cells, insert the gene sequence for the CAR or TCR construct into the cellsDeoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA), and grow these modified T cells to the desired dose level. The modified T cells can then be infused into the patient or frozen and stored for later infusion. Once infused, the T cells are designed to multiply, through a process known as cell expansion, when they encounter the targeted proteins and to kill the targeted cancer cells.

CD19-Directed Product Candidates

The Company product candidates, such as JCAR015, JCAR017, and JCAR014, which use CAR technology to target CD19, a protein expressed on the surface of almost all B cell leukemias and lymphomas. The Company has rights to commercialize each of these product candidates across the world. The Company JCAR015 is an advanced development product candidate, and it has demonstrated clinically meaningful complete remission rates in adult patients with r/r ALL. JCAR015 uses the CD28 costimulatory domain and CD3 enriched peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), which requires fewer process steps for! manufacture than its defined cell composition product candidates. JCAR015 is being tested in a Phase I open label clinical trial of patients with r/r ALL for the treatment of refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

JCAR017 also targets CD19, but differs from JCAR015 in several important respects. JCAR017 uses the 4-1BB costimulatory domain and a defined cell composition of CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells. JCAR017 is in development for pediatric patients with r/r ALL. JCAR017 is being evaluated in a Phase I/II clinical trial in pediatric r/r ALL.

JCAR014 also targets CD19. JCAR014 uses the 4-1BB costimulatory domain and is composed of CD8+ central memory T cells and CD4+ T cells in a defined ratio. JCAR014 is being evaluated in a Phase I/II trial as a treatment for a number of B cell malignancies in patients relapsed or refractory to standard therapies.

Additional Product Candidates

The Company is exploring the potential of its CAR and TCR technologies against targets that have the potential to treat cancers not targeted by CD19-directed products, in particular, difficult-to-treat solid organ tumors, such as certain breast, lung, and pancreatic cancers, as well as B cell malignancies that do not express CD19. The Company CD22 is a cell surface protein widely expressed on B lymphocytes. It is expressed by B cell malignancies, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The Company L1CAM, also known as CD171, is a cell-surface adhesion molecule that plays an important role in the development of a normal nervous system. It is overexpressed in neuroblastoma, and there is increasing evidence of aberrant expression in a variety of solid organ tumors, including glioblastoma and lung, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers.

The Company MUC-16 is a protein overexpressed in the ovarian cancers, but not on the surface of normal ovary cells. CA-125 is a protein found in the ! blood of ! ovarian cancer patients that results from the cleavage of MUC-16. CA-125 levels in the blood are a common test for ovarian cancer progression because they correlate with cancer progression. Its MUC-16/IL-12 product candidate uses its armored CAR technology. IL-12 is a cytokine that can help overcome the inhibitory effects that the tumor micro-environment can have on T cell activity.

The Company ROR-1 is a protein expressed in the formation of embryos, but in normal adult cells its surface expression is predominantly found at low levels on adipocytes, or fat cells, and briefly on precursors to B cells, or pre-B cells, during normal B cell maturation. ROR-1 is overexpressed on a variety of cancers including a subset of non-small cell lung cancer, triple negative breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer. It is expressed on B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma. The Company high-affinity TCR T cell product candidate targets WT-1, an intracellular protein that is overexpressed in a number of cancers, including adult myeloid leukemia, or AML, and non-small cell lung, breast, pancreatic, ovarian, and colorectal cancers.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

That potential has a company like Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE: PXD  ) seeing a future that includes drilling more than 40,000 wells to capture over 9 billion barrels of potential oil equivalent production. That's $900 billion of potential oil in the ground for this $22 billion company. While it will cost a lot of money to get the oil out of the ground, it still makes for a very compelling investment opportunity.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

When Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE: PXD  ) reported its second quarter results on August 4, investors initially sold off the stock. That's surprising in more ways than one. The company reported adjusted second quarter earnings of $195 million, or $1.35 per share, which actually beat analysts' estimates of $1.28 per share. Further, the company narrowed its 2014 production growth guidance range from 14%-19% to 16%-19%.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

This brings me to one final point. One area of oil production many overlook is the Permian. That legacy oil play could actually be the best of the bunch thanks to the Sparberry/Wolfcamp, which just might be the second largest oil field in the world, at 50 billion barrels of oil equivalent. That's almost double the Eagle Ford's potential and more than four times that of the Bakken. One company that sees huge potential here is Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE: PXD  ) . Overall, the company believes it has the potential to capture about 9 billion barrels of oil equivalent as it drills about 40,000 wells over the coming years.

  • [By MONEYMORNING.COM]

Late Tuesday evening, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that it would allow exports of ultra-light oil (essentially condensate after very minimal processing) by two companies - Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (NYSE: PXD) and Enterprise Products Partners LP (NYSE: EPD).

Advisors' Opinion:

November is just two days old, but already the offshore drillers are getting hammered, with Atwood Oceanics (ATW), Transocean (RIG), Seadrill (SDRL), Noble (NE) and Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) down more than 8% so far this month.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

All one needs to do is look at the growth trajectory of Seadrill (NYSE: SDRL  ) -- which holds the deepwater drilling industry's fifth-largest rig fleet -- to see what could be in store for CARBO. Figuring out how to improve the profitability of deepwater extraction has proved to be a significant obstacle to tapping reserves and has left many defaulting to higher oil prices as the best way to make development economical. An innovative ceramic proppant could change that frame of mind.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

One day after Transocean (RIG) reported solid earnings, offshore drillers like Atwood Oceanics (ATW), Noble (NE) and Seadrill (SDRL) continue to show resilience.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Aimee Duffy]

    Winners
Given the current state of U.S. energy production, most midstream companies are winners these days. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP  ) got things started off on the right foot, reporting in mid-April and beating expectations on revenue and EPS. Here are some highlights from around the industry:

Buckeye Partners (NYSE: BPL  ) trounced analyst expectations on the top and bottom lines, and recorded a distribution coverage ratio of 1.21 times payouts, allowing the partnership to boost its distribution. DCP Midstream Partners' (NYSE: DCP  ) distributable cash flow popped 40% year over year, and the partnership completed its Eagle Ford dropdown transaction with parent company DCP Midstream, boosting its stake in the lucrative South Texas shale play. Boardwalk Energy Partners' (NYSE: BWP  ) operating revenue and net income increased 5% and 10% year over year. More importantly, distributable cash flow popped 24%, though the partnership elected to hold the distribution flat quarter over quarter. Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP  ) had no distribution increase either, but things are looking better than they have in a while. Production in the Eagle Ford Shale is driving growth at ETP, and the partnership is reorganizing into an operation that is stronger and more diverse than ever before.

Very strong results here, now let's take a look at some midstream companies that didn't perform as well.

Question: If I’m relying on dividends for income, does it make sense to sell some or all shares because the price went up 50 percent, Buckeye Partners LP (NYSE: BPL) for example?

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Vera Yuan]

As we mentioned earlier, stock selection in the financial sector was the primary cause of our relative underperformance during the quarter. Two of the Fund's top five detractors, Genworth (GNW) and BancorpSouth Inc. (BXS) were in the financial sector. Genworth (GNW) declined over 24 percent and cost the Fund 38 basis points of performance during the quarter. The company announced a sizeable addition to reserves for purposes of covering potential loss exposure to long-term care insurance provided to its earliest customers. This was not an unknown risk to us as we did factor this into our thinking when we established our position. However, while the reserve build was in-line with our projections, it was still a negative surprise to the street. Our view with respect to long-term care is that States will allow for premium increases, sometimes sizeable, as GNW (and others providing this insurance) are last line defenses to patients who would otherwise likely end up in Medicaid and exacerbate state budget situations. Unfortunately, a mismatch in timing occurs as claims rise first, then reserves are lifted followed by a request for premium increases. Ultimately, we feel GNW is very cheap and is in a good position to seek premium relief even as the company continues to restructure its business in both long-term care and mortgage insurance.

Of all the companies I will profile in this series on basic-needs stocks, perhaps none fits the bill more perfectly than NextEra Energy, which engages in the generation, transmission, and sale of electric energy in the United States. Unless you plan on living your life in the woods, chances are that electricity has become a basic necessity of your life. We need it for our homes to power our lights, stove, refrigerator and central air, just as enterprises and government agencies need it to power their vast infrastructure. With the demand for electricity consistent in almost any economic environment (both booming and recessionary), electricity price remain inelastic -- a telltale sign of a necessity product.

It wasn't even a small fry compared the industry's largest player, which, at the time, owned over 2,500 properties. American Realty Capital raised around $100 million in its IPO.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Trulia (TRLA), which operates as a real estate search engine. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 167%.

If you take a look at the chart for Trulia, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating gains for the last month, after it gapped up sharply from $36 to $48 with heavy upside volume. That sideways trend has shares of TRLA moving between $40.56 on the downside and $48.40 on the upside. Shares of TRLA are now starting to bounce off some near-term support at $42 a share, and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent range.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TRLA if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $47.95 and then once it takes out its all-time high at $48.40 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 679,352 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then TRLA will set up to enter new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $55 to $60, or even $65 a share.

Traders can look to buy TRLA off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $41.96 or $40.56 a share. One could also buy TRLA off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

We are two trading weeks into the new year and the 3D printing sector along with 3D printer stocks like ExOne Co (NASDAQ: XONE), Stratasys, Ltd (NASDAQ: SSYS),3D Systems Corporation (NYSE: DDD) and Makism 3D Corp (OTCBB: MDDD) have been printing their share of red ink for investorsdespite the fact that 3D printing got plenty of attention atlast week'sConsumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas while thebroader stock market rally has largely held up. With that in mind, here is the latest 3D printer stock or sector news you need to be aware of:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

In retrospect, their pullbacks come as no real surprise. Neither Voxeljet AG (NYSE:VJET) nor Camtek LTD. (NASDAQ:CAMT) saw their shares soar on any news that was meaningfully sustainable, and after the "shoot first, ask questions later" market had a chance to start asking questions, it became clear that - even with the largest of glimmers of corporate progress unveiled a few weeks ago - CAMT and VJET both had been bid up more on hype and less on substance. Meanwhile (and this could be bitterly ironic to some), a small cap play in the same 3D printing space that (1) didn't beat the daylights out of its hype-drum, and (2) is actually much closer to bringing a revenue-bearing product to the market [per today's news - more on that below] isn't getting anywhere near the same attention. That company? Makism 3D Corp. (OTCBB:MDDD). The good news is, MDDD finally looks like it's revving its engine, while Camtek and Voxeljet AG shares continue to deteriorate.

What little the world knows about Apple's concrete plans comes mostly from Apple and its hardware partners. Apple released schematics for what third-party iOS controllers should look like (which also revealed that OS X might get in on the fun). Companies such as Logitech (LOGI), ClamCase and Moga followed suit, and they have been teasing their upcoming products since September. And updates to a handful of existing iOS games have included bits about supporting "Made for iPhone" controllers in their release logs.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] ombination of not really cheap on a P/E basis and just barely cheap on a cash basis and it was connected to homebuilding.

I could go on like that. But I not sure I understand why knowing anything about the perceptions of others actually helps my own investment decisions. I also not sure the reasons Ie offered for the cheapness of those stocks are actually the reasons anybody else had for selling the stock, not buying it, etc. In fact, I think those are just plausible reasons I made up.

But that not the problem with wanting to know why a stock is cheap. The problem is how that knowledge or the quest for it directs your attention. And attention is the scarcest resource an investor has.

Once you know what somebody else perception is, you try to either prove or disprove that perception. In essence, I see the problem of thinking about market sentiment of worrying about the Keynesian beauty contest as being like one of those optical illusions. Like the duck-rabbit illusion. In fact, this concern of mine is one of the reasons why Ie suggested investors read Kuhn.

They often talk about some past period like the 1920s or 1950s with a total misunderstanding of what people were looking for in a stock back then. Of how they thought about stocks. Of what they thought stocks were. This isn a misanalysis of the facts. It a misclassification.

When Ben Graham started on Wall Street there was none of this tocks for the Long Runstuff. There was no talk of asset classes. There were investments called bonds. And there were speculations called stocks. And it was heresy when Ben Graham basically said a cheap stock is a better investment than an expensive bond.

You become a bad financial historian when you confuse your own perceptions your own way of classifying stocks and noting the aspects of a stock with how people really thought about stocks back then.

So, I think of simple industries as food, entertainment, etc. And anything where logistics provide a competitive advantage. I mentioned a company I own shares of George Risk Industries (RSKIA) before. Its advantage is the ability to deliver a cheap product on time. They can't produce the product for less than the competition. If the purchase price was huge relative to what the end customer was purchasing as part of the same activity (the end customer is construction in this case) price competition would be important. Instead, delivery is important.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] things I said was that I knew George Risk's materials cost was higher than some competitors' selling price. The fact that any company could survive under conditions like that immediately suggested that dollars paid for the product was not the key concern for this product.

Perceived costs had to involve other concerns like customization, shipping speed, reliability, etc. Because it was a low cost product going into a higher cost product going into very high cost projects it seemed likely there was the opportunity to raise prices if needed. And that's what they ended up doing. The important clue for me in that investigation was the severe cost disadvantage George Risk had. You couldn compete at such a cost disadvantage unless price was less important than I initially thought.

I think you will find that most of these insights are not available in the financial statements. They come from reading the 10-Ks of all companies in the industry, reading articles about the companies, listening to all conference call transcripts, etc.

For example, there is not much in the financial statements of Carnival (CCL) that explains how the cruise business really works. But all of the companies in the industry (CCL, RCL and NCL) freely discuss the economics of their business in great detail. They break out costs before and after fuel. They give you per-passenger prices of how much newly built ships cost. They give you lots and lots of details. They explain how they price their product (the way airlines do) and so on. There is an extreme level of detailed explanation of the business in the various conference calls, 10-Ks, etc.

A great source for this information is going back to the time the company went public or at least finding the S-1 of a competitor. When a company goes public it often gives much more detail into product economics, etc., than it will later on when it reports annual results.

That is also a good place to learn about market share, com

Take George Risk (RSKIA). All of their competitors moved overseas. Theye still in Nebraska. Management doesn really claim they can either be better or cheaper than their competitors. They know they can be cheaper. And as far as better this isn dark chocolate theye selling. Beyond customization, timeliness, and reliability I not sure the idea of ualityhas much meaning in that business. It either frustration-free or it not. The two things George Risk can be are timely and customized. Both of those things are easier to be for American customers if you are manufacturing in the U.S.
